Found a piece of furniture in the trash, yard sale, or received a hand me down? Is your husband bugging you about that piece of furniture you wanted to flip but haven’t gotten around to it? Well SEARCH NO MORE! Here are EASY furniture flipping ideas anyone can do!
The first step in furniture flipping is to decide on what you want to do, which ultimately can be the hardest when looking at all the furniture flipping ideas online. I will keep it super simple here as I am the most beginner of beginner when it comes to flipping furniture I found in the trash.
Before we begin, we should probably think about the type of furniture you have. And by type, I really mean, what is it made out of? Is it wood or laminate? This will determine what you can and cant do. As I mentioned I want to keep this super simple so we wont go into complicated staining processes for laminate furniture, etc. We are going to stick to paining or staining wood, or painting laminate furniture.
P.S. There is a way you can stain laminate, here is an article on the process.
Easy Furniture Flipping
Most furniture will be made of out some sort of wood such as, solid wood, plywood, veneer, hardboard, particle board, composite wood, etc. Each material type may require different surface prep and tools so just take some time to research what material your furniture is before starting. For this article, we are going to cover painting or staining real wood and veneer furniture.
Furniture flip idea #1 – all black everything
When in doubt, paint it black! Picked this up for $50 and was in great condition. All it needed was to be cleaned and painted. The original color was orangey so there was no saving it in my opinion! This dresser had a veneer top layer on the outside of the body and face of the drawers. The method used for this was a light scuff using a 220 grit sandpaper and painted with a paintbrush using Rust-o-leum milk paint. This is optional but you can use a finishing wax topcoat to protect it.
Furniture flip idea #2 – Trash to Fab
This piece of furniture came right from the trash and looked like something someone made in shop class. We did have to pull the backing off and reinforce it a bit as the whole piece was wobbly. Once we did that we wiped it down with a wet rag and let dry. I decided to take off he decorative piece on the front above the door to create some cleaner lines and make it look more modern. Additionally I wanted to cut out the door to add a fabric and backing there for some texture. I will link a tutorial on how to do that in another blogpost.
All we did for this piece was paint it using Dixi Bell all in one mineral paint Applied with a paintbrush and added brushed gold hardware. I love the two tone look. This piece was completely transformed.
