Gardening is a magical past time. Some people just have the gift of a green thumb and have the ability to make everything look beautiful. I started gardening a few years ago and really fell in love with it. Yes, admittedly I have killed a lot of plants BUT I also have learned a lot! If you are interested in gardening but don’t know where to start, you reached the right blog. These 5 spring garden plants are perfect for even to most beginner gardener!
I am no master gardener, in fact I tend to miss a few watering days here and there and tend to forget to fertilize my plants more often then not. Any easy to care for plant that creates beautiful flowers and color, will be my favorite! For these spring garden plants, you just need to find a perfect spot in your yard, make sure you at least remember to water them, and they will keep returning year after year.
EASY Spring Garden Plants
1. Lilacs
Lilacs will bloom as early as May. They also have a sweet smell which makes them equally as nice to smell as to look at. Lilacs like a lot of sun and well drained soil. If you have a really hot summer, you should water them regularly. The best part… no fertilizer needed! YAY. So basically just plant and add a little water and you have beautiful lilacs. WIN!.
Cutting Tip : since lilac blooms grow on woody stems be sure to strip the stems of the outer bark once you cut the blooms. Some folks crush the ends of the stems or cut them up the middle. All of these methods work, the main thing you’re trying to do is to allow the blooms to absorb more water once they are cut, which will prolong their vase life.
2. Peonies
Peonies like to get planted and left alone. Perfect plant for me and anyone else who is like me. Make sure you plant them somewhere that gets direct sunlight for at least 6 hours each day. A few top tips for planting these beauties:
- Fertilizer not needed
- Do not plant too deep into the ground
- Make sure to water in the warmer months
- Cut back once winter comes
- Very hard to be replanted or moved once established
3. Oriental Poppies
These flowers are absolutely stunning. I have yet to try to plant these but I am thinking I will try this year. Poppies do not like to be replanted so make sure you pick a nice spot for them right off the bat. This plant will bloom in spring and summer but really likes the cooler months. Each time the plant blooms it will die back a bit. Don’t be alarmed that’s what its supposed to do. These flowers are not a fan of cutting and will wilt quickly.
4. Alchemilla
This hearty plant is great for spreading and filling and looks great as a boarder plant. Be sure to water in the warmer months as it really likes full sun. This plant does well in vases so feel free to bring some cuttings inside. This plant is very hearty and doesn’t mind being moved or transplanted.
5. Japanese Rose
The Japanese rose bush is a perfect flowering shrub for any beginner because it is so hearty and constantly puts out blooms. You can cut it and bring it inside in a vase and the flowers last about a week! This plant is okay with being transplanted and is overall low maintenance.
Creating a garden can be a fun and rewarding way to invest in your space. It takes some time to find plants that fit your personality but in the end its totally worth it!
